The Louis Copeland Birthday Suit Challenge

The Louis Copeland Birthday Suit Challenge

At Louis Copeland, we believe that the suit you wear should tell a story and make you feel your best. This year, we took it up a notch by running a little competition among our stores, where each team was tasked with designing the ultimate "birthday suit" for Louis Sr.—all through made-to-measure tailoring. The catch? No navy pinstripes were allowed, which is Louis’s usual go-to!

The teams were kept in the dark about each other’s choices, pushing their creativity and stepping out of Louis’s comfort zone to design something truly unique. Once all the suits were ready, Louis Sr. would try them on and pick his winner.

1. Dundrum: Super 160 from Ariston – The Sharp Tailored Look

First up, the Dundrum team chose a Super 160 fabric from Ariston, known for its lightweight, fine finish. They created a sharp, sophisticated design with a peak lapel and a handmade Milanese buttonhole. Paying homage to Louis’s work in the film business, they even incorporated a commemorative lining featuring Louis’s name alongside Barry McGuigan and Daniel Day-Lewis from the film The Boxer (1997). John Champion from Dundrum talks about the suit, explaining how the sharp shoulder and fine fabric make it stand out.

2. Wicklow Street: A Green Chalk Stripe Twist

The Wicklow Street team went for something truly special: a super lightweight Loro Piana fabric in green with a chalk stripe. Ed from Wicklow Street explains how they chose the color based on Louis’s personal preference, adding a touch of luxury with a double-breasted design. The addition of pleated trousers and a soft shoulder with a Milanese buttonhole makes this suit both formal and comfortable. A nod to classic tailoring with a modern twist, Ed also shares how they balanced Louis’s preference for style with his need for versatility.

3. Capel Street: The Blue Unlined Summer Suit

Next, we have the Capel Street team, who designed a relaxed, breathable suit using a lightweight, unlined fabric perfect for summer travel. The blue suit features no lining or embroidery, making it ideal for warmer months when comfort and ease are key. The Capel team focused on creating a stylish yet laid-back suit that would pair effortlessly with chinos or dark jeans. It’s the kind of suit you can wear on a summer getaway or for those days when you need something smart yet relaxed.

4. Cork: The Funky Herringbone with a Personal Touch

The Cork store designed a beautiful herringbone Solaro cloth suit in Super 130. Paul was speaking on behalf of Nigel from Cork, highlighting how this fabric provides the perfect balance between fine quality and durability. The sharp shoulder line and funky lining, which features Louis’s phone number, add a playful yet personal touch to the design. The suit is a perfect combination of traditional tailoring with a dash of fun, ensuring that Louis would stand out while staying true to his style.

The Winner: The Verdict from Louis Sr.

This competition has been an exciting journey, pushing the boundaries of tailoring and creativity. Each store brought their own flair to the competition, and the designs reflected the care and attention that Louis Copeland’s team puts into every suit. Whether it was the sharp, sophisticated look from Dundrum, the playful yet classic style from Capel Street, or the versatile green herringbone from Wicklow Street, it’s clear that Louis Copeland suits are made for every occasion.
